Slasher films—born out of Italian giallo and cemented by "Psycho" (1960)—are defined by a supernatural killer, driven by revenge, who hunts down his victims in brutal ways and always returns from the dead. Although 1980s franchises like "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th" made the genre predictable, independent cinema is reviving it.
The prime example is "In a Violent Nature" (2024), a Canadian gem that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (the historic birthplace of experimental films like "The Blair Witch Project"). Dubbed an “environmental slasher,” the film stays true to classic tropes (the woods, reckless teenagers, and a killer modeled after Jason Voorhees), but revolutionizes the audiovisual language with slow sequence shots, artistic angles, and anatomically impossible deaths.
