Summary
The film Law Abiding Citizen (2009), directed by Félix Gary Gray and written by Kurt Wimmer, presents a harsh critique of the judicial system and impunity. Through the story of Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler), a man who loses his family to criminals and is betrayed by the system, the film exposes how corruption, negligence, and abuse of power can drive citizens to seek justice on their own.
The review analyzes how the film reflects the reality of many judicial systems, where procedural errors, lack of resources, and impunity affect access to justice. In Mexico, for example, recent data shows that over 90% of crimes go unpunished, leading to widespread distrust and desperation among citizens.
Although Law Abiding Citizen exaggerates an individual's ability to challenge the system, its underlying message resonates with real-world issues. The film leaves us with the reflection that justice is not always accessible to everyone and that, in many cases, the law favors those with power and resources. In this sense, the review highlights how cinema can be a powerful tool to expose structural flaws in the legal system and spark debates on the need for fairer and more equitable judicial reforms.
